About Surveying & Geomatics Engineering:

Geomatics is a modern scientific term, introduced this century. The Geomatics Engineering refers to the art and science of measurements and spatial data management, which is contingent on the use of leading-edge technologies, information technology, and computer programming. It embraces the traditional areas of surveying and mapping, such as geodesy, cadastral, construction and route surveying, photogrammetry and hydrographic surveying, as well as the comparatively new fields such as remote sensing, digital applications and spatial information systems.

The Geomatics approach is, first, to approximate all the available methods to solve a particular spatially related problems, and second, to select the method or combination of methods that is most appropriate for the task at hand. This involves a consideration of all the relevant technical, economic, social, and management factors, related to the problem.

Mission of the Department of Surveying and Geomatics Engineering:

The Department at Al-Balqa’ Applied University was established in 1997, to maintain a unique educational and research center in the interdisciplinary fields of Surveying and Geomatics Engineering and Information Technology in Jordan as well as the Middle East Region.

This department advocates state-of-the-art technologies to support the needs and requirements of the public and private sectors in the following areas:

    • Plane and Topographic Surveying;
    • Cadastral Surveying and Land Administration;

    • Global and Satellite Positioning Systems.

Program Outlines:

  • The study plan consists of 5 years - 10 semesters.
  • Students must complete 160 credit hours.
  • University Requirements: 27 credit hours as follows: University Mandatory Courses: 21 credit hours; University Elective Courses : 6 credit hours
  • Faculty Mandatory Requirements: 27 credit hours
  • Department Specialization Requirements: credit hours as follows: Specialization Mandatory Requirements: 91 credit hours; Specialization Elective Requirements: 6 credit hours
  • Support- Specialization Requirements 9 credit hours

The Bridging Program:

The department offers also a bridging program in Surveying and Geomatics Engineering. Students graduated from community colleges or universities in the fields of surveying, photogrammetry, cartography, engineering, geology and others are given the opportunity to continue their education and obtain a Bachelor Degree in Surveying and Geomatics Engineering.

Till now the department has admitted students from different community colleges such as the Royal Jordanian Geographic Center College for Surveying Sciences, Wadi Al-Sir College –UNRWA, Amman Intermediate College, AL-Salt College, Kalandiah College- Palestine, Qatar College of Technology, Philadelphia University and Yarmook University

An average of about 45 hours is accredited for students bridging in the department, according to their related educational backgrounds.

Laboratories in the Department of Surveying and Geomatics Engineering:

The department has established several laboratories equipped with state- of- the-art instruments and software to serve in different fields such as:

  1. Surveying and Geodesy Lab: consists of all kinds of traditional surveying instruments along with the latest modern terrestrial and global positioning systems.
  2. Close Range Photogrammetry and Precise Measurements Lab: Digital camera, gravimeter, high-precision total stations, surveying and global positioning system software.
  3. Digital Photogrammetry Lab: Digital photogrammetry workstations, software, scanners and plotter.
  4. Geology, Geomorphology and Photo- Interpretation Lab: Rich collection of minerals, models and stereoscopes.
  5. Geographic Information Systems and Digital Mapping Lab: Various GIS software, plotter, scanner.
  6. Remote Sensing Lab: various remote sensing and digital image processing software.
